SLING BACK
The Finn Tero Palmroth has found a way to organize the puzzle of producing shoes in to-day´s world. He came back to the shoe business five years ago with the brand “Next Generation” hoping to be able to develop his own ideas in ladies´ shoe design. He first tried to organize his product-design and the production itself between Italy and Estonia and also between Italy and Finland, but the pieces did not fit together. Lately, however, he has found a solution that works like a whistle, now all is being done in Italy – and at prices that work in to-day´s markets.
Italian shoe-producers have of late met difficulties in trying to balance their production in view of the competition from Asia and many have had to cease production. Others survive by producing the parts in Asia and keeping the assembly in Italy and others again are organized in co-production where member is working at jobs best suitable for each one´s know-how and location.
Tero has learned to utilize this last-mentioned road to a successful operation. He´s met with the experienced consultant and door-opener Massimo Mazzoni with contacts in all parts of the Italian shoe-industry. These two have come to a successful solution for Tero´s Next Generation brand.
The wooden lasts are produced by Italoforme. This company produce lasts to desired designs and are totally concentrated on this their specialty. They produce about 100 designs in a month and have for example Vagabond as an important customer. When the prototype is as it should be, the wooden last is sent to a near-by company who produce the plastic lasts in numbers.
Then comes the El-Mo company who make the heels and soles according to Tero´s specifications. They have an experience reaching over 40 years and are situated near the others in this chain.
We have visited all these companies in one day. Of these El-Mo have clients as Prada and Ferragamo. They are very flexible, which in Tero´s operation is the keyword.
At Testampi all special details of various materials contributing to the looks of the shoes are added. This includes also the metal logos that Tero uses displaying the lettering NG Tero Palmroth.
All parts are then delivered to Florinda where the final assembly is being done. Florinda have a production of about 100 pairs per day with 15 employees and a list of customers like Prada and Jimmy Choo and now also Tero Palmroth. Florinda´s operationsa are naturally also in Toscana, not far from Florence. Tero Palmroth´s know-how about shoes comes originally from his father´s operations and an apprentice´s training in England. After stepping out of the car-racing in the U.S. and a few year´s soul searching he decide to came back to his roots. He´s made a success of it and he will be showing his latest creations in March at Micam in Milan. He is represented in Norway by the Bjarne Haugsvaer company. In total he has representants in altogether 15 countries in addition to Italy and Finland.
